If you've ever called somebody out for casually using an offensive term, you've likely heard this response. The R-word — "retarded" — is a prime example of this. This term has seeped into everyday language as a synonym for "stupid" or "broken" at the expense of the dignity and respect of those with developmental disabilities. But is it ever OK to use the R-word?
