Gluten-Free, Carb-Free Cloud Bread Is the Latest Healthy Eating Trend
It's not the floating loaves of cinnamon raisin and sourdough from your sweetest dreams. Rather, cloud bread is a low-carbohydrate, gluten-free "bread" taking over the health and diet world. Pinterest named it as one of the top 10 health trends to take over 2016, Yahoo reported.
"It's made by whipping egg whites with cream of tartar to give it a fluffy texture (hence the name), and then gently folding in a mixture of egg yolks, cream cheese and sweetener," Edwina Clark, head of nutrition and wellness at Yummly, told Women's Health Magazine.
It looks and feels like the fluffy baby of a pita bread and a rice cake, since it contains no flour, wheat or sugar, the Huffington Post reported. People on weight-loss, gluten-free, sugar-free or paleo diets are fond of it as a substitute to bread, using it for sandwiches, mini pizzas and desserts.
Dietician-nutritionist Karen Ansel called cloud bread a "better bet than white bread," according to Yahoo.
"From a micronutrient perspective, cloud bread contains numerous nutrients not found in traditional bread, including vitamin A, vitamin D, phosphorus, choline and selenium," Clark said. "These nutrients support eyes, bones, metabolism, cognitive function and immunity."
But like most things, there's a catch. "Cream cheese is a highly processed food and not one that I recommend. It's also not a great source of vitamins or minerals," dietician Michelle Tirmandi told Huffington Post. In general, although cloud bread has about two grams of protein, it lacks the two to four grams of fiber that whole wheat bread can offer.
Despite their bad reputation in the diet world, carbs are good fuel for both the brain and body, according to Women's Health Magazine. If considering switching to cloud bread, make sure to also get carbs from fruits or quinoa.
