This High Schooler's Mom Never Attended Her Prom — So He Took Her as His Date

MelissaRoshan "MelRo" Potter never had the chance to go to prom. The Ohio mother, who was conceived through rape, grew up in 23 different foster care homes; at age 16 she was pregnant and homeless.

But by the time her son's high school prom came around this year, 18-year-old Trey Potter knew there was only one woman he wanted by his side: his mother. "She never had that experience and she's risked so much for throughout my life and made so many sacrifices. I thought it would be the right thing to do," he told WATE 6 in Knoxville, Tennessee.

"When I was pregnant with him well, I heard, 'Mel because you lived in the foster care system, you're probably not going to raise a thriving individual. It just doesn't happen. You can't give him what you don't have,'" said MelRo. "I've proved them wrong."

MelRo, who today is an advocate for homeless and foster children, shared her prom experience on Instagram.

"The time is here, I'm on my way to prom!" she says in a video. "You heard that right, my son actually invited me to be his prom date because I was pregnant with him when it was my prom time."

"I think it shows her how much I appreciate her cause I really do after all she's been through and all I've been through with her," said Trey.
