‘Rogue One’ poster: How promotion for the ‘Star Wars’ movie differs around the world
On Dec. 16 Lucasfilm will release Rogue One. The film is the first standalone Star Wars film and stars Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso, a young woman who, along with a group of new allies, attempts to steal the plans to a familiar and dangerous weapon: the Death Star.
When Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released in late 2015, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the Chinese poster of the film, which took lead actor John Boyega and minimized him in the poster. Considering this, it's interesting to see how the American Rogue One poster — pictured in part below — fares alongside a few of the international posters for the film.
The official U.S. poster for the film features members of the cast of Rogue One — including Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen and Forrest Whitaker — but Jones, the lead, towers over the rest. She takes up most of the frame, even more than the Death Star behind her.
Latin America poster
Although everyone is slightly smaller in Latin America's Rogue One poster, the proportions are still pretty similar to the American one. Jones is still the biggest figure. The only addition to this poster are the clones at the bottom and the various spacecrafts above them.
Korean and Japanese posters
The Korean and Japanese posters for Rogue One have two things in common: they are both extremely minimalistic, and, like the American are all about Jyn Erso. In fact, the Japanese poster, which features Jones on a beach, is just of her — alone. The Korean one, on the other hand, incorporates the cast but Jones is nonetheless front and center.
