Nicki Minaj Mariah Carey Feud: President Obama Weighs In

Culture

With so many things to worry about (ahem, the economy, the Middle East, the election) it seems mildly mind-blowing that time and time again interviewers force the hands of our politicians onto positions on pop culture. Do we really care what Mitt Romney thinks of Snooki? (ICYMI, Romney's Snooki stance is thus, "She's lost weight. She's energetic. Just her spark-plug personality is kind of fun.") Or what the president thinks about Kanye West? (FYI Obama thinks he's a "jackass.")

On Friday, a cheeky Florida radio host asked the president for his thoughts on the American Idol judges feud between Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj and whether or not the president could reconcile the dueling divas.

His reply? "You know what, I think they are going to be able to sort it out. I am confident ... I think that both outstanding artists are going to make sure that they are moving forward and not going backwards."

You see what he did there? He took something nonsense, and tied it back to political speak. To be 100% fair, there is absolutely zero way to speak about the Nicki Minaj/Mariah Carey rift without sounding completely shallow ... and Obama did about as solid a job of making it sound mildly important as possible.

Yes it is nice to have leaders who have a sense of what's going on in the entertainment world, but I'd rather hear their position on abortion than their take on the ingenue du jour.
