At about 12 p.m. Eastern today, Donald Trump will take the oath of office and officially become the 45th president of the United States of America.

The swearing-in ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m. and last until about 12:30 p.m. After he takes the oath, Trump will give his inaugural address. The inaugural parade and inaugural balls will follow. Tens of thousands of protesters are expected in Washington, D.C., to demonstrate against Trump.

President Barack Obama's term will end at exactly noon today.

In a statement Thursday, Obama thanked Americans for their "decency, determination, good humor and kindness."

"And when the arc of progress seems slow, remember: America is not the project of any one person," Obama wrote. "The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word we. 'We the People.' 'We shall overcome.'"

"Yes, we can."
