Jyoti Singh Pandey: India Gang Rape Victim Death Shows Rape Happens Everywhere

Impact

There have been several comments of late regarding how backwards India is, how Indian men are so awful, and the complete lack of women's rights. Though points within each of those issues is true — there are outlandish traditionalists, awful men, and a long way to go to gender equality — we cannot ignore that rape culture is not limited to those angry, brown places with all those people and all that dirt. It happens everywhere.

And we absolutely cannot ignore one simple fact we hardly ever see in the Eastern world: Young men and women protesting side by side, as we see on Raisina Hill in Delhi. We cannot ignore that many of the countries listed in the link have also had female heads of state. Rape culture is not limited in its reaches, but toleration of it can be.
