State of the Union 2013: Social Media and Twitter Statistics

Impact

Twitter saw record numbers from President Obama's State of the Union address on Tuesday night.  From the moment Obama stepped into the chamber to the end of Sen. Marco Rubio's (R-Florida) GOP response, Twitter was full of comments, reactions, feedback and criticism.

#SOTU was the official hashtag for the 2013 address and President Obama's comments about the middle class and minimum wage took center-stage as the most tweeted moment through the evening.  Obama's mention of a call to vote on gun regulations took a close second.

There was a huge drop in Twitter activity during Sen. Marco Rubio's GOP response, which peaked at his sip of water and comment on not "protecting millionaires."

Compared to 767k tweets during last year's SOTU, the 2013 address gathered upwards of 1.36M tweets.
