The 115 cardinals who convened in The Vatican to elect a new pope, after former Pope Benedict XVI sudden February resignation, elected a replacement after a fourth attempt. The cardinals took an initial vote on Tuesday and two more on Wednesday morning — all of which ended with black smoke emerging from the Sistine Chapel chimney where the cardinals have been deliberating behind closed doors to find a new pope to lead the Catholic Church out of a crisis.
