The Election Of Pope Francis, Narrated in GIFs

Catholic faithful, you have a new pope!

Who is this new pope?

Your new Pope is: Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina!

Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio will be the first Jesuit pope and is known for his advocacy on behalf of the poor. Bergoglio is the first pope elected from the Americas.

One thing is for sure, the entire process has been filled with a lot of ...

Faster than you could say 'Habemus papam,' the Catholic faithful have a new pope. A cloud of white smoke rose from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel to the cheer and jubilation of thousands who had gathered in St. Peter’s Square.

First came some liturgical ceremonies. The senior cardinal asked "Do you accept your canonical election as Supreme Pontiff?" Once the cardinal accepted, he choose his new name. It's too exciting. While this was happening, the crowd was literally freaking out.

The process feelt very much like a wedding ceremony.

The election for new pope began after Pope Benedict resigned. 115 electors chose among their colleagues after reconvening today for the fourth ballot. The voting began just a day and a half ago. In order to become pope, the individual had to receive at least 77 votes. One by one, each of these cardinals will swear their obedience to the new pope. We also can't forget that the new pope will also have a ring, dare I say, a ring of power?

This new pope will have to confront many issues now facing the church: he must reunite the faithful and is charged with making a more transparent Vatican bureaucracy. He will also be tasked with embracing modernity, at least when it comes to technology. The new Pope will receive his own Twitter handle.

How Jorge Bergoglio handles the mounting challenges the Catholic church faces will be an indication of whether or not the church will have any relevancy in the future. Maybe Bergoglio will usher in a new era of tolerance and acceptance?

Either way, the world's 1.2 billion Catholics are partying pretty hard right now.
