Young people tend to know very little about how health care operates in the United States or how to obtain health insurance. Young adults coming off their parents' health care for the first time often face a formidable challenge attempting to understand the maze of insurance companies, providers and plans.
In attempting to achieve true democratization of health care access through the ACA, the federal government must provide clear, understandable information about the basics of the health care system. Doing this will ensure real egalitarianism. However, this will take more than simply having a website. It means an active, engaged dialogue with young adults on exactly what to expect from healthcare reform using mainstream channels such as social media and apps.
We as a society must get creative about ways to disseminate information about health care and health reform so that all citizens may benefit from the tremendous step forward that is health care reform.
